Financial difficulties during COVID-19? Here is some of the government help available:
- For those without access to paid sick leave – the government is waiving the one week waiting period for EI.
- There is a $900 bi-weekly Emergency Care Benefit for those who are in quarantine or sick with COVID. (For those who are ineligible for EI).
- Emergency Support Benefit – provides financial relief for those who have lost their jobs or had their hours reduced and are not eligible for EI.
- For small business owners – there are a number of programs available for small business owners including the Canadian Emergency Wage Subsidy and a special business loan of $40,000.
How does COVID-19 affect my mortgage?
The COVID-19 pandemic has been financially difficult for many Canadians. If you are having difficulty paying your mortgage because of the impacts of COVID, we encourage you to do the following:
- Take advantage of any government relief programs that you may be eligible for.
- Contact your lender or your mortgage broker to see if you can get a lower rate on your mortgage. Bank of Canada Rates have gone down significantly over the last couple of years, so if it has been some time since your mortgage was renewed, you might be able to lower your mortgage payment by getting a better rate.
- Contact your lender to see if it is possible to have your mortgage payments deferred.
